How to Log Contacts with World Radio League

2 min read

Logging contacts in World Radio League is fast, flexible, and powerful — whether you’re just getting started in amateur radio or you’re an experienced operator looking for a modern logging solution. This guide walks you through how to create logbooks, enter QSOs, use helpful tools like CAT control and spotting, and explore maps and statistics.

Getting Started #

Visit worldradioleague.com and log in for free.

From your dashboard, you can:

  • Create a new logbook

  • Open the QSO Manager

  • View and edit your recent QSOs

Creating a New Logbook #

  1. Go to the Logbooks section

  2. Click “New Logbook”

  3. Name your logbook (e.g., “James’ Demo Log”)

  4. Choose a template:

    • Default WRL Logger (recommended for general use)

    • All Fields Logger (advanced data entry)

    • POTA Logger (for Parks on the Air)

  5. (Optional) Add an Activity if you’re activating a park, summit, etc.

  6. Set your Operating Location:

    • Choose from saved locations or set a custom one

    • Location data powers map generation and propagation statistics

  7. Click Save

Logging a Contact #

Inside the logging interface:

  1. Enter the Call Sign

  2. Use the Tab key to move through entry fields

  3. Enter details like:

    • Frequency

    • Band and Mode

    • Optional fields (time/date, grid, park number, notes)

  4. Press Enter to log the QSO

✅ Logged contacts appear instantly in your contact list below.

CAT Control Integration #

If you’re using CAT Control, WRL can automatically:

  • Read your current frequency from your radio

  • Update the logger in real-time when you change frequencies

  • Display S-meter readings

Learn more in How to Set Up CAT Control.

Using the Quick Settings Bar #

Located at the top of the logging interface, the Quick Settings Bar lets you:

  • Change your operating location

  • Switch your logbook template on the fly

  • Add equipment metadata for later analysis

  • Toggle between default WRL, POTA, and All Fields templates

Templates change which fields are visible in the logging form — for example, All Fields gives you access to more advanced data entry.

Advanced Entry Options #

Below the main form, you’ll find secondary fields for additional logging details:

  • Manual Time/Date: Log a QSO from a past day

  • Notes: e.g., “First contact with Antarctica”

  • Power level, SNR, RST

  • POTA Park Numbers (for hunting or activating)

  • Grid Square and QTH details

These allow for more complete entries and better export formatting for awards and activity platforms.

Spotting Integration #

World Radio League features a built-in spotting interface:

  • See active operators from sources like POTA

  • Filter by band, mode, or DX

  • View in table, grid, or map layout

  • Double-click a spot to auto-fill your logbook

You can also:

  • Spot Yourself using “Spot Me”

  • Spot the Other Operator using “Spot Them”

If you’re running a POTA activation, you can even auto-spot to POTA directly from the logger — no need to open POTA.app separately.

Mapping & Statistics #

After logging contacts:

  • View your QSOs plotted on an interactive map

  • Click Share Map to generate a downloadable summary image with:

    • Bands used

    • Modes used

    • DX entities worked

    • Total number of contacts

    • Rate statistics

These maps are great for sharing on social media or tracking your own progress.

Exporting, Templates, and Settings #

From the logging screen:

  • Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top right to:

    • Export ADIF or Cabrillo files

    • Adjust equipment details

    • Change other logbook preferences

You can also manage all of this from the Logbooks page where you can:

  • Delete a logbook

  • Import ADIF files

  • Rename or update logbook properties

Mobile Logging #

World Radio League is available as a mobile app (iOS) that syncs with your web account:

  • Log contacts in the field (even offline)

  • Use GPS-based location tools

  • Sync logs automatically when connected

Your mobile logs appear in your online dashboard instantly.
