Setting Your Operating Location

1 min read

One of the most important steps before logging contacts in World Radio League is configuring your Operating Location. This location data is essential for enabling accurate mapping of your contacts and generating visual reports, such as coverage maps and distance calculations.

Why It Matters #

When you log a contact, World Radio League uses your operating location to:

  • Calculate distance and azimuth between you and other operators

  • Plot each QSO on a map, creating a visual trail of your contacts

  • Generate band/mode-specific activation maps (especially useful for POTA/SOTA)

  • Provide enhanced logging insights such as park-to-park distances, locator grids, etc.

Without an operating location set, your log entries may lack geographic context and certain features may not function as expected.

How to Add an Operating Location #

Follow these steps to configure your first location:

  1. Go to Your Profile:

    • Click your profile icon in the top navigation bar.

    • Select “Profile Settings” or “Edit Profile.”

  2. Open the Operating Locations Tab:

    • Scroll to the section labeled “Operating Locations.”

    • Click the “New Operating Location” button.

  3. Enter Location Details:

    • Name your location — e.g., “My Home,” “Portable Site,” or “Winter QTH.”

    • Choose how you want to define your location:

      • Street Address – Use your actual address (not displayed publicly).

      • Grid Square – Useful for ham operators familiar with Maidenhead locators.

      • Map Pin – Select the exact point on an interactive map.

  4. Save and Set as Default:

    • Click “Save.”

    • If this is your primary location, click “Set as Default.”

Tips #

  • You can create multiple operating locations for home, mobile, field operations, or contesting.

  • When logging a contact, WRL will default to your set location unless you choose a different one.

  • Be precise — the better your location data, the more accurate your maps and stats will be.
